Cash 5 Rules & Payouts in Pennsylvania

The Pennsylvania Cash 5 lottery game is a daily drawing of five numbered balls between 1 and 43 and offering players winnings based upon the number of balls matched.

The rules were revised in 2008 by the state Legislature. As with all Pennsylvania state lotteries, the proceeds of the lottery are used to help senior citizens.
  1. Tickets

    • Players pick five numbers on their tickets, or they can ask for a Quick Pick, in which the computer randomly selects numbers. To select numbers, players color in a circle on a grid representing all 43 numbers. There are five grids on each ticket, each representing a $1 game; players can play from 1 to 5 games per ticket. The filled out grid is then turned in to the seller, who will print up an official copy. You can also retain your original slip.

    Drawing method

    • Cash 5 drawings are done daily in Harrisburg. The numbers are selected randomly by a lottery machine.

    Winnings pool

    • Half of gross sales for each drawing is allocated to the winnings pool to cover the cost of prizes. Additionally, in the event that a prize, of any level, is not won, those winnings are rolled into the winnings pool for the following day. All prizes are paid in one-time, lump-sum payments.

    Payouts

    • Matching five numbers is the jackpot prize, which consists of 67.94 percent of the winnings plus any money carried forward from a previous drawing, minus the fourth place prize. A minimum jackpot winning is $125,000 divided among the winning tickets (there may be multiple players who selected the same five numbers).

Matching four numbers nets 11.9 percent of the winnings pool, after the deduction of the fourth place prize. Ticket holders who match three numbers draw from a 20.16 percent portion of the winnings pool. Any ticket holders matching two numbers win a $1 prize.
