How to Design a Sword Game

A sword game can be designed to represent classic sword duels of medieval times, jousting matches, a pirate duel or even the lightsaber sword fights of the "Star Wars" films. These games will test balance, reflexes and defensive and offensive skills. A sword game can be appropriate for children to play, as long as safety precautions are undertaken, and can even be entertaining for adults as well. Be sure, no matter what age group is playing, that the swords used are not sharp and cannot cause damage or harm. Play the game outdoors to limit damage to furniture, electronics or home decor.

Instructions

  1. Battle of the Inner Circle

    • 1

Mark a circle on the ground outside in masking tape approximately eight feet wide across the middle.

    • 2

Divide the group of players into pairs.

    • 3

Choose one pair and have them stand inside the circle.

    • 4

Equip each player with a pool noodle.

    • 5

Set a timer to three minutes, during which time the players sword-fight to cause the opponent to step outside the circle. The first player to cause her opponent to step one foot outside the masking-tape line wins the sword fight. If three minutes expire without a victor, the duel is a tie.

    Balance Battle

    • 6

Using masking tape, create a straight line on the ground outside approximately eight feet long and three inches wide.

    • 7

Take players two at a time to duel. Set a timer to three minutes.

    • 8

Give each player a pool noodle. Using the line as a balance beam, they must try to cause each other to step off the taped area using their pool noodle.

    • 9

Start the timer and allow the pair to duel. The winner of the duel goes on to the next round to challenge the next contender. If the duel ends in a tie, both players sit out and take a turn at the end against the prevailing victor.
