Board Games
Board games are an old family standard for lazy or rainy nights, but they aren't all what you might expect. Many new board games use electronics, DVDs and more to make the experience more interactive and exciting than a roll of the dice. Of course, games like chess, checkers, backgammon and Monopoly continue to entertain. You can often buy board games inexpensively at garage sales, dollar stores or flea markets.
Cards
Card games can be entertaining and don't have to be about gambling. Rummy, hearts, spades, war, slaps, and spoons are great for family-size groups and are good for developing memory, math and reflexes. Decks of cards are widely available inexpensively, and you can play thousands of games with them.
Contests
A little competition can increase interest and excitement. Shows like American Idol and the Singing Bee have made people are more interested in singing in front of others. Even without a karaoke machine, your family tocan have a singing contest and vote anonymously on the winner. Have a cooking contest, a wrestling match or even a costume contest that the whole family will enjoy.
Sports
You don't have to be outside to play sports. Depending on how much room you have in your house, you can play smaller versions of basketball, bowling and even golf. Carpet and a plastic cup make great miniature golf courses. If you want to spend a little money, buy a pool, foosball, air hockey or ping pong table for years of enjoyment and healthy activity.
