Gymnastics Rules for What to Wear on the Trampoline

The modern trampoline was created in the 1930s by George Nissen and Larry Griswold. Since that time the entertaining bouncing device has made its way into the Olympics, novelty basketball and volleyball variants-- and many backyards. While trampolines can be a great deal of fun, they also pose several safety risks to children and adults. For this reason there is a specific dress code to follow when using a trampoline.
  1. Leotards or Compression Shirts

    • It is recommended that men wear leotards or compression shirts with or without sleeves when using a trampoline. These compression shirts should be skin tight and made of spandex or lycra. Females should wear a skin-tight leotard with or without sleeves. In some gymnastics clubs, T-shirts are not allowed and in others they can be worn if they are extremely well-fitting. This is because a T-shirt that is too big can get a person tangled up or can slip over the gymnast's eyes while bouncing. This, like other trampoline rules, is different from club to club.

    For the Feet

    • Loose, baggy socks can get caught up and can cause a gymnast to get stuck on mid-bounce. Participants can have bare feet on the trampoline if it is padded on the ends. Otherwise, it is recommended to get specific trampoline slippers. These are less slippery than socks and will prevent injury if a child gets caught on the metal parts on the side of the trampoline. It is best for the foot covering to be no more than ankle length.

    Shorts and Tights

    • Boys may wear shorts of a competition style with no longer than a 5-inch inseam. Men can wear long tights that are skin tight. Baggy pants or shorts can get caught in the trampoline or get the gymnast's legs tangled to the point that he cannot stick a landing properly.

    Jewelry and Hair

    • There should be no jewelry permitted while using a trampoline. Earrings, watches and rings should not be worn on the trampoline. Long hair must be secured in a place close to the head by rubber bands, flat metal clips, ribbons or soft-hair decorations.

    Padding

    • In a home trampoline session, it is important to wear proper protective clothing. Kids and adults alike also should wear a helmet and knee pads when bouncing . These devices can help a child to avoid getting hurt when falling off of the trampoline.
