Horseshoe Pit or Court
Depending on what materials are available, a horseshoe court or pit can be constructed with sand, clay or even on grass. The rectangular area where the game is played needs to be at least 6 feet wide and 46 feet long. When playing on grass, this region can be marked off with anything from rope to paint. Campgrounds and recreational areas sometimes have permanent horseshoe pits that are made out of cement and filled with sand or clay.
Metal Stakes
Two metal stakes are required for the game of horseshoes. These stakes are placed 40 feet apart from each other at opposite ends of the horseshoe pit. If your pit is the correct dimensions, the stakes should be 3 feet from all adjacent boundaries. Be sure that the stakes are driven far enough into the ground so that they will not move when hit by a flying horseshoe. Stakes made specifically for horseshoes can be purchased at most sporting-goods stores, but you can also use other types of metal bars.
Horseshoes
A game of horseshoes requires four horseshoes. Each player or team of players is allowed to throw two horseshoes each per turn. The horseshoes are thrown from one side of the pit towards the stake at the other end of the pit. The goal is to "ring" the horseshoe around the stake. Horseshoes are commonly made out of metal, but you can buy plastic horseshoes at most sporting-goods stores. Plastic horseshoes are popular among children because they are far easier to throw.
