Different Pac-Man Games

The first "Pac-Man" game was released in North America in 1980 as an arcade coin-op. Three decades later, "Pac-Man" games were still being distributed, marking the extraordinary popularity of this arcade figure. While the styles of the games have changed, the iconic yellow head, colorful ghosts and edible nuggets and fruits have stayed constant.
  1. The Original

    • "Pac-Man" was released by Namco in 1980 and licensed to Midway for distribution in American arcades. You control a circular character with a giant mouth, roaming a 2-D maze, eating small nuggets and fruit while avoiding four murderous ghosts. This seemingly simple premise spawned remakes on video game consoles and a series of sequels.

    Ms. Pac-Man

    • Two years after the original arcade game, Ms. Pac-Man got her own game. "Ms. Pac-Man" held the same premise, and little changed graphically outside of the character in the game wearing a bow. The ghosts were given new movement patterns, the design of the maze was altered and the gameplay was sped up.

    Pac-Land

    • Released in 1984, "Pac-Land" featured a collection of changes. The game was a side-scrolling platform, moving away from the 2-D mazes of the first games. The character design of Pac-Man changed, modeled after the "Pac-Man" Saturday morning cartoon. Your quest is to help a fairy get home as ghosts chase you using cars, pogo sticks and other moving vehicles.

    Pac-Mania

    • "Pac-Mania," released for the arcade in 1987, returned to the maze roots of "Pac-Man." The game featured 3-D graphics and gave Pac-Man and the ghosts the ability to jump. Instead of just four ghosts, some levels featured eight ghosts that chase you. Power pills were added, giving you extra speed and more points for eating ghosts.

    Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures

    • "Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures" was released in 1994 for the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo. It does not follow the maze formula that many previous "Pac-Man" games did, and you do not have direct control over Pac-Man. Instead, you must guide Pac-Man through the side-scrolling levels using objects in the environment and a slingshot to fire at Pac-Man if he refuses to move.

    Pac-Man World

    • "Pac-Man World" was released in 1999 for the PlayStation 1. Pac-Man's friends and family are kidnapped, and you are tasked with freeing them. You eat dots and fruits, and fight with the ghosts, just as in the original but in the format of a 3-D platformer. Bonus stages take you to levels modeled after original mazes, featured in older versions of "Pac-Man."

    Pac-Man Fever

    • Pac-Man and other Namco characters appear in the 2002 "Pac-Man Fever" for the Nintendo GameCube and PlayStation 2. "Pac-Man Fever" is a party-board game, which has multiple players competing to reach certain goals on the board. Several popular Namco characters join the Pac-Man universe, including characters from the "Tekken" and "Soulcalibur" franchises.

    Pac-Man World Rally

    • "Pac-Man World Rally" is a 2006 kart-racing game released for multiple platforms. This game featured popular Namco characters, racing against each other in a series of clashes. The yellow nuggets from the original take a prominent role. When you collect a certain amount during a race, your kart transforms into a special vehicle, turning all your opponents into edible ghosts like the original "Pac-Man" game.
