List of Turbo CD Games

NEC's TurboGrafx-16 video game console (known as the PC Engine in Japan) was released in North America at the beginning of the 16-bit generation in 1989. It was the first console on the North American market with the ability to play CD games; it did so via a CD-ROM peripheral that was initially sold separately from the base system. In 1992, the base system and CD-ROM were combined into a single unit, known as the TurboDuo. The console was officially discontinued in 1993, though remaining stock was sold by mail order for several more years.
  1. 1989-1990

    • Some of the first TurboGrafx CD games attempted to cash in on early 1990s trends like full-motion video and "edutainment." These include "J.B. Harold Murder Club," "Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective," and "Magical Dinosaur Tour." (1992's "It Came From the Desert" was a latecomer in this regard.)

However, other early releases run the gamut of popular game genres, from sports to action and adventure, including "Fighting Street," "Final Zone II," "Jack Nicklaus Turbo Golf," "Last Alert," "Monster Lair" and "Prince of Persia." Perhaps the most important early Turbo CD releases were a trio of Japanese role-playing games from 1990, "Valis II" and "Valis III," and "Ys Book I &II," which pushed the system's audio and, to a lesser extent, visual capabilities.

    1991-1992

    • After 1990, the TurboGrafx began to focus more heavily on shooter and role-playing genres. "Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes," and "Ys III - Wanderers from Ys" were released in 1991. 1992 saw the release of "Cosmic Fantasy 2," "Dungeon Master: Theron's Quest," "Exile," "Forgotten Worlds," "Gate of Thunder," "Lords of Thunder" and "Shapeshifter." Other releases during this period include "The Addams Family," "It Came From the Desert," "Splash Lake," ports of the Amiga computer games "Lords of the Rising Sun" and "Shadow of the Beast," and a port of the PC adventure game "Loom."

    1993 and Beyond

    • 1993 was the TurboGrafx's final year in production but still brought a fairly heavy release schedule. The focus was still primarily on shooters and RPGs, such as "Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams," "Dungeon Explorer II," "Exile: Wicked Phenomenon," "Might and Magic III: Isles of Terra" and "Super Air Zonk: Rockabilly Paradise." The rest of the releases for the year were "Beyond Shadowgate," "Bonk 3: Bonk's Big Adventure," "Buster Bros.," "Camp California," "Godzilla," "John Madden Duo CD Football," "Riot Zone," "SimEarth: The Living Planet" and "Vasteel."

After 1993, new releases were few and far between, and included "The Dynastic Hero" in 1994 and "Space Invaders: The Original Game" in 1995.
