Gameboy Advance SP Colors

Nintendo released the Game Boy Advance SP in 2003 as a replacement for the original Game Boy Advance. The system sported a new, smaller form factor with a clamshell design that resembles a pocket-sized laptop. It also addressed the most common complaint about the original GBA design by adding a front light to the screen to improve visibility. (In a later revision, the front light was replaced with a brighter back light.) The "SP" in the name is short for "special."
  1. First and Second Generation

    • The Game Boy Advance SP was launched in North America in two colors: Cobalt (dark blue) and Platinum (silver). This was soon expanded to four with the addition of Flame (red) and Onyx (black). All four models had a metallic finish.

    Third Generation

    • A third set of colors was released in North America to coincide with a 2005 hardware revision which improved the SP's screen by replacing the original front light with a back light. Pearl Blue and Pearl Pink introduced pearlescent finishes to the system, while Graphite provided a slightly lighter alternative to the pure black Onyx.

    Limited Editions

    • Nintendo released numerous limited edition versions of the SP in markets around the world. North America was no exception, getting seven limited edition variants. Toys R Us sold Yellow SPs bearing the likenesses of cartoon character Spongebob Squarepants and Pokemon character Pikachu. The Surf Blue model, which was slightly lighter than Cobalt, was available at Best Buy. A Lime Green SP bundled with the game Donkey Kong Country was sold through Target. Walmart carried an Onyx variant emblazoned with graffiti-style artwork reading "Who Are You?", a tie-in with a Nintendo marketing campaign. A Platinum model decorated with tribal tattoo designs, originally released only in Europe, was eventually sold through EB Games in North America. The Classic NES model, designed to look like the original Nintendo Entertainment System, was also sold in limited quantities, but was not exclusive to a particular retailer.
