How to Get a Cool Chao Without an Action Replay in Sonic Adventure 2: Battle

In the game "Sonic Adventure 2," which was initially released on the Sega Dreamcast, and later re-released for the Nintendo GameCube, there is a mini-game in which you raise tiny creatures called Chao. These creatures can be used in a number of games such as races and karate, but they have to be raised to take on these duties. You can cheat by using Action Replay or GameShark devices, but it is also possible to raise them using the in-game systems.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin your game and go to Chao island, one of the in-game areas off of the main hub areas. Within Chao island, you will find a number of eggs.

    • 2

Hatch an egg by either picking it up and shaking it with the "B" button, throwing it by pressing the "B" button while walking or leaving it alone for a while. You will find your first baby Chao. Each of these methods will affect how your Chao develops, either along the Hero, Neutral or Dark paths.

    • 3

Bring your Chao to the Classroom, which is behind you when you enter Chao Island. Drop off your Chao and wait for 10 to 15 minutes for its lesson to finish. While waiting, you can speak with the Principal of the Chao school, who will also give you more detailed Chao-raising tips.

    • 4

Feed your Chao fruits to help it grow. If you give it primarily fruits from the garden, it will grow to be Neutral. If you feed it Dark Fruits, it will grow to be dark Chao, and Hero fruits will make it grow heroically. The character you feed your Chao with will also impact its growth; use heroic characters to develop heroic Chao, and dark characters for dark Chao.

    • 5

Feed your Chao regularly, or it will hunt down fruit on its own. This means you may not control their development, but if they are hungry and you have a Dark or Hero fruit in your hand, it will run toward you.

    • 6

Pick up your Chao to snuggle and stop it from crying. This helps Chao develop properly and quickly, whether they are Heroic, Dark or Neutral.

    • 7

Give your Chao an animal to affect its abilities and colors. Seafaring creatures might turn your Chao yellow and turn it into swimmers. Birdlike creatures (except for the water-bound penguin) give your character the flight ability, and may turn it purple. Fast creatures like the warthog, rabbit and cheetah are tied to green color and run abilities. Powerful creatures can pass their power and red hue to Chao, and most other creatures may cause blueness and give a random ability. There are also mythical creatures that can turn your Chao gold, and ghost creatures which will turn them black.

    • 8

Use Knuckles or Rouge to dig around the Chao gardens to find hats. You can sell these hats for 50 rings apiece or put them on your Chao to make them look a little cooler.

    • 9

Pay your electricity bill. You need to earn Rings from selling hats or from playing through the Story Mode levels to pay this bill and keep your Chao happy.

    • 10

Take your Chao to the various games. Enter it in Karate competitions and races. Your Chao will do better when it has had enough small animals and other bonuses to help its skills in these competitions.

    • 11

Repeat this process on a regular basis. Check in on your Chao daily to make sure it is developing. Chao grow over time and disappear into cocoons between phases. After it has transformed a couple of times, it may die or be reborn as a baby Chao again.
