What Are All the HMs in Pokemon: SoulSilver?

"Pokemon: SoulSilver" is a Pokemon game created for the Nintendo DS, and allows players to catch, train and battle their Pokemon. "SoulSilver" is a remake of the Silver version of Pokemon, with new things added to the game. One important element to Pokemon games are HMs, which allows the player to progress through the game as well as makes doing certain tasks simpler. These HMs are crucial to advancing in the game and each one serves a specific purpose.
  1. Definition

    • HM stands for "Hidden Machine" and allows your Pokemon to learn certain abilities. These abilities are used both in battles as well as in the game world. Certain HMs are necessary to advance through the game, such as cutting through a tree or pushing a rock out of the way. Without HMs, you will not be able to complete the game.

    HM List

    • There are 8 HMs that can be acquired in "Pokemon SoulSilver," which are Cut, Fly, Surf, Strength, Whirlpool, Rock Smash, Waterfall and Rock Climb.

    Ability and Use

    • Each HM performs an attack when used in battle, but their real purpose is to advance through the game world. Sometimes obstacles block your path that only HMs can overcome. Cut is used to clear plants that block your path. Fly allows you to travel instantly to any city that you have already visited. Surf allows you to surf through water, reach islands and meet water Pokemon. Strength allows you to push boulders out of your path. Whirlpool allows you to pass through whirlpools that block your path in water. Rock smash allows you to break rocks that block your path. Waterfall lets you climb up waterfalls to reach areas above you. Rock climb is similar to waterfall and allows you to climb up rocky surfaces.

    HM Locations

    • Cut can be found in the Ilex Forest. Fly is given to you in Cianwood City after defeating Chuck. Surf is given to you after you help Kimono Girl in Ecruteak City. Strength is given to you by Hiker on Route 42. Whirlpool is given to you by Lance in Mahogany Town Rocket Hideout. Rock Smash is given to you by Hiker on Route 36. Waterfall is located on the Ice Path. Rock Climb is given to you by Professor Oak in Pallet Town after you have obtained 16 Badges.
