The "Pokemon" series title "SoulSilver Version" is a Nintendo DS remake of "Silver Version" for the Game Boy Color. This remake, as well as its counterpart, "HeartGold Version," features several upgrades, including an expanded roster of Pokemon to raise and train. Included in this roster is at least one of the three starters available in "Ruby Version," "Sapphire Version" and "Emerald Version." Earning these Pokemon requires that you have already beaten a significant portion of the game, but you can get them without trading.

Go to Saffron City in the Kanto Region after defeating Red at Mount Silver.

Find the Silph Co. building and head inside.

Speak to Steven Stone on the main floor of the Silph Co. building.

Select a color when prompted by Steven Stone. Which color you select will determine which Pokemon you receive -- red will yield Torchic, blue Mudkip and green Treecko.

Nickname the Pokemon if you desire. You now have one of the "Ruby," "Sapphire" or "Emerald" starters as one of your Pokemon.
