How to Mod a Wii Controller

The Nintendo Wii game controller uses a wireless signal, eliminating the need for a cord connected to the console. You can modify (or "mod") the electronics inside the Wii so that it will activate a rapid-fire mode. A modification kit must be acquired from a video game store or hobby shop. You will need to partially disassemble the Wii controller.

Things You'll Need

  • Tri-wing screwdriver
  • Phillips jeweler's screwdriver
  • Wii modification chip
  • Electric drill
  • Bonding glue
  • Soldering iron
  • Solder

Instructions

    • 1

Open the battery compartment lid on the back of the Wii game controller. Remove the batteries. Remove the screws from inside the compartment with the Tri-Wing screwdriver.

    • 2

Remove the screws from the controller with a Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Pull the two sections of the controller apart. Remove the circuit board from inside the controller.

    • 3

Place the section of the controller that has the battery tab at the bottom on the work surface. Rotate the section of the controller so that the tab is closest to you. Drill a hole through the button left corner, just above the screw hole, with an electric drill.

    • 4

Insert the tip of the switch connected to the modification chip into the hole. Apply bonding glue around the switch to cement it into position. Place the chip, contact pins up, to the right and above the switch, up against a protruding piece of plastic. Apply bonding glue around the chip to cement it into position. Let the glue set for an hour before continuing.

    • 5

Place the circuit board on the work surface with the text right-side up. Locate the horizontal white strip with the six numbers near the top of the board. Draw an imaginary line from the second number on the left down the board. Locate the contact that intersects this line that is at the upper left corner of the circle with an "X" inside of it. Solder the end of the yellow wire connected to the chip to this contact. Let the solder cool for two minutes.

    • 6

Locate the two contacts next to the number "055" on the circuit board. Rotate the circuit board so that the number is upside down. Solder the end of the red wire connected to the chip to the contact right next to the number. Solder the end of the green wire connected to the chip to the contact next to the one just soldered. Let the solder cool for two minutes. Unplug the soldering iron.

    • 7

Reassemble the circuit board inside the controller. Place the two sections of the controller back together. Reattach the screws. Reinsert the batteries and close the lid.
