SD Cards
The Wii can have the majority of its data backed up onto compatible SD cards (including miniSD and microSD varieties if used with an adapter). While Nintendo does sell its own brand of cards, other SD cards can also be used if they are compatible. Only cards that are 2 GB in size or smaller can be used, and cards with a slow speed may not work at all. While cards bigger than 2 GB might work, Nintendo does not guarantee that they will.
Back Up Game Saves
Open the flap on the front of your console and insert an SD card into the reader with the label facing the disc slot. Turn on the Wii and go to the main menu. Click on "Wii Options" followed by "Data Management," then click "Saved Data" and "Wii." Select the save game file you want to back up and click "Copy," then "Yes" to transfer it to the SD card.
Back Up Virtual Console Games
Insert the SD card into the console as described in the process to back up game saves. Go to the "Wii Settings" menu, then "Data Management" and "Wii Channels." Select the channel of the virtual console game you want to back up, then click "Copy." When asked "Copy to SD Card?" click "Yes" to complete the process.
Back Up Miis
Your Mii avatar can be saved to your Wii remote, which makes it ideal if you want to take your controller round to a friend's house and play as yourself. To do this, navigate to the "Mii Plaza" from the "Mii Channel" on the main menu. Select the Wii remote icon and then choose the remote you want the Mii saved on. Place the cursor over the Mii you wish to backup and hold the "A" and "B" buttons to pick it up. Drag it to the bar at the top and release the buttons, then press "Save and Quit."
