How to Chip Your Wii

A Wii modification chip or modchip is used by Nintendo Wii enthusiasts for a variety of reasons. Install a modification chip so that you can backup data to DVD-R or DVD-RW, play imported games, or as a way to circumvent the digital rights management. This modification will alter your Wii and increase its capabilities. Chip your Wii and expand your knowledge of video games in your home region and beyond. Since the Wii can also play DVDs, inserting a modification chip will allow you to watch DVDs from outside your region.

    • 2

Remove all stickers and tri-wing screws from the front and back panels.

    • 3

Gently detach and remove the faceplate. Remove the remaining two tri-wing screws under the two rubber pads near the back of the bottom shell.

    • 4

Remove the screws securing the metal shield and the screws securing the Wii's optical drive. Disconnect the power cord connecting the processor circuit board and the optical drive. Gently lift out the Wii's optical drive.

    • 5

Solder the chip to the Wii's central processing board. Re-connect the power cord and replace the optical drive. Put the Wii back together ensuring all screws are correctly and tightly placed. Use the set up disk that came with your chip to install it. If the setup disk doesn't run, you've installed your chip incorrectly.
