Start Up Complications & Malfunctions With the Wii

The Wii is a seventh-generation video game console made by Nintendo. Its primary competitors are Microsoft's Xbox 360 and the Sony PlayStation 3. It is distinguished by its wireless remote, which detects three-dimensional movements and interprets them into game play. The Wii was launched in 2006, and it has sold more units since its launch than any of its competitors.
  1. AC Adapter

    • You may have problems starting your Wii because of a power connection issue. Try resetting the AC adapter by unplugging it from both ends for at least two minutes and unplug anything in the universal serial bus, or USB, ports. Make sure the adapter is inserted all the way on both ends and that the outlet is working.

    Bricking

    • "Bricking" a Wii console means that you have modified it to the point that it no longer works as anything except a brick. If this happens, the Wii may display a warning screen when you turn it on or it may simply display nothing. You can prevent this by only installing update files for your region, not deleting files and not installing modifications or unofficial channels.

    External Devices

    • Check any device that connects to the Wii for physical damage. Any frayed wires or cracked housing can cause the system to shut down. Unlicensed products also can cause the Wii not to work.

    Ventilation

    • The Wii system will shut down if it can't get proper ventilation to avoid overheating. Don't operate the Wii on carpet or in an enclosed space. If you have your Wii situated in a vertical position, ensure that the vent on the bottom is lined up with the hole in the stand and that no foreign material is blocking the hole. Inspect the vents on the back and sides of the Wii for dust buildup. Use a vacuum with a soft brush to remove any buildup.

    Screen is Black

    • If your power light is green but your screen is black, try powering down your system by pressing the power button for 10 seconds. If that doesn't help, try unplugging your AC adapter for two minutes. Be sure that your Wii has the most recent system menu updates. If you still have a problem, your Wii needs to be repaired.

    Wii Remote

    • Sometimes the Wii remote may not respond or sync properly when you turn on the Wii. If the cursor is not responding, try holding the remote button-side down and gently tapping it against the palm of your hand. Make sure the sensor bar cord is properly inserted and positioned. Check the batteries to make sure they aren't dead. Make sure you're not too close to or far from the TV -- three to 10 feet. Ensure there isn't any interference, such as sunlight, candles and other physical objects. You also can try re-syncing your Wii Remote by following the instructions that come with the Wii.
