Wii Won't Read a Disk

The Nintendo Wii console plays discs made for both the Wii and Nintendo's previous home video game system, the GameCube. The Wii console is not designed to play other discs such as CDs, DVDs or Blu-Ray movies. If you have trouble with your Wii disc drive, try some troubleshooting steps to solve the problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure the disc is inserted properly. If the Wii is positioned vertically, the disc label should face to the right. If the Wii is positioned horizontally, the disc label should face up.

    • 2

Clean the disc if it appears to have foreign debris on it. Use a slightly damp cotton cloth and rub from the inside out, refraining from circular motions that can cause scratching. Do not use cleaners or solvents when cleaning a Wii or GameCube disc.

    • 3

Eject the disc from the Wii and turn the power off. Turn the power back on and insert the disc again to see if it will now play.

    • 4

Inspect the label and see if the disc is made for play in the United States, Mexico, Canada and Latin American countries. If the disc is made for play in other regions of the world, it will not work in a Wii console sold in North America.
