Things You'll Need
Instructions
Determine your Internet connection. The fastest, most reliable connections are cable, DSL and fiber optic. Less compatible, but still likely to work, are wireless, cellular and satellite connections. A dial-up connection will not be fast enough to connect the Wii to the Internet.
Determine the type of your router. Routers can be either wireless or wired. If you aren&'t sure which one yours is, check the manufacturer&'s instruction booklet for information. If you have a wired router, you will need to purchase the Wii LAN adapter in order to connect. This adapter will allow the Wii to connect to the router via an Ethernet cable. Once this is done, no additional settings will be required, and the Wii will be ready to go online. However, if you have a wireless router, no additional equipment is needed, and you can proceed with the setup.
Turn on the Wii and make sure you are at the main menu. From there, select the Wii icon on the bottom left of the screen. Next, choose "Wii settings." Scroll to page two, and select "Internet." Now select "Connection settings." Three connection slots will appear on the screen, and they should all say "none" if this system has never been connected to the Internet. Choose the first slot, labeled "Connection 1" and then "Wireless connection." Four different connection options are now displayed, which include "Search for an access point," "Manual," "AOSS" and "Nintendo Wi-Fi USB connector." Searching for an access point is the easiest and recommended method.
Choose “Search for an access point.” The Wii will ask which access point you want to connect to. Select “OK” and the Wii will search for a connection point. When any are found, they will be displayed on screen. Choose the one with the best signal, which is indicated by a green icon next to it. Check to see whether this connection is locked or unlocked. If it is unlocked, that will be indicated by a symbol of an open lock. If you want to use this connection, select “OK.” The Wii will now be connected to the Internet.
If the connection is locked, indicated by a gold lock symbol, this connection has wireless security, and you will need to input the password or key.
Find and input your WEP/WPA key, if your connection is secured. To find this number, check the router itself. Many routers have this information listed on the bottom or side. If the number can&'t be found there, Nintendo&'s official website contains a list of most current routers. At the website, select your router, and information will be given about how to find your key.
Perform a system update, if necessary. If one is required, the Wii will indicate this immediately. Select “Yes” when you are ready to update. After connecting to the Internet for the first time, an update will probably be required. This ensures that your console has the latest firmware and can play the newest games with no issues.
