How to Play Wii Backup Discs

The Nintendo Wii is only equipped to play Wii game discs and GameCube discs, but developers have made it possible to download and change Wii software to play backup discs. These discs function as a regular Wii game while keeping your original copy safe from scratches or other disc damage. Using backup discs requires the installation of additional channels and software to your Wii, all available for free online.

Things You'll Need

  • SD card
  • SD card reader
  • Homebrew Channel software
  • WiiGator Backup Launcher Software

Instructions

    • 1

Insert a SD card into your computer's card reader and format it by going to "My Computer," right-clicking on the card and selecting "Format." Press the "OK" button and wait for the card to format completely.

    • 2

Go to WiiBrew's Homebrew Channel web page to download the Homebrew Channel to your SD card. For most Wii consoles, you will choose the "Bannerbomb" download, but older Wii consoles should use the "Twilight Hack" download.

    • 3

Remove the SD card from your computer once the download is complete. Insert the SD card into your Wii and turn the Wii on. Use the Wii remote to select the "SD Card Channel" at the bottom of the screen.

    • 4

Wait a minute for the channel to load. The "Homebrew Channel" installation will automatically begin with a pop-up message on the screen. Select the "Yes" option on the message and follow the on-screen directions to install the channel.

    • 5

Test the channel out by restarting the Wii and selecting it with your Wii remote. Once the channel loads, exit out of the Homebrew Channel, remove the SD from the Wii and insert it into your computer.

    • 6

Download the Wii Gator application from We Hack Wii and place the files into the "Apps" folder on your SD card. Remove the SD card and insert it into the Wii.

    • 7

Load the Homebrew Channel and select the "Wii Gator Backup Launcher" program. If a window pops up for a new upgrade to the software, accept and download the upgrade.

    • 8

Insert the backup disc into your Wii. It should load fine if the program is already running, but in some cases you may have to remove the disc, restart the Wii and insert the disc before you load the Wii Gator Program.

    • 9

Press the "A" button on the Wii remote to load the disc from the program. Press the "B" button on the Wii remote to restart the Wii and let the disc load through the Wii's disc channel.

    • 10

Play the game as any other normal Wii game and use the Backup Launcher for any other backup discs.
