How to Get a Wii to Work Through a Wired Network

Nintendo's Wii gaming console was designed with out-of-the-box Wi-Fi internet capabilities, but Nintendo did not provide out-of-the-box convenience for wired internet users--namely, the Wii does not contain an ethernet port. Instead, wired internet users must purchase a LAN adapter from Nintendo or a third-party retailer to connect an ethernet cable and the Wii's back-panel USB ports.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug in your ethernet cable into the internet access point of your wired network. If you are using a DSL internet connection, Nintendo has suggested running your DSL connection through a router.

    • 2

Insert the free end of the ethernet cable into the LAN adapter.

    • 3

Insert the LAN adapter into the USB port on the back of the Wii. Securely fasten all cables into their ports.

    • 4

Turn on your Wii. On the main menu screen, click "Wii."

    • 5

When the Wii screen asks you to select between "Data Management" and "Settings," choose "Settings."

    • 6

Scroll through settings options until you see "Internet" from the selection menu. Choose "Internet," then choose "Connection Settings" to proceed.

    • 7

Save your internet connection settings to one of the empty connection panels. Name your connection and identify the type of connection you are making as "Wired." Saving your connection will allow you to use multiple internet connections without having to reconfigure your Wii each time you change connections.

    • 8

Select "Test Internet Connection," which will appear at the end of your internet connection setup. Enter and save your network password, if applicable. After a few moments, your test will finish.
