How to Set Up a Wii Wireless IR Bar

The Nintendo Wii, with its motion-sensing controllers, revolutionized modern video games when it was released in late 2006. This new approach to video games was great, except that it meant yet another wire hanging behind the TV for the infrared (IR) receiver that interprets the controllers' movements. Luckily for those who like their entertainment center to be completely clutter free, third-part accessory makers have come up with wireless IR receivers, or sensor bars.

Things You'll Need

  • Wii wireless sensor bar
  • AA batteries

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug your wired sensor bar from your Wii console while it is powered off.

    • 2

Insert the AA batteries into the wireless sensor bar (the number of batteries required varies depending on the make of the sensor bar).

    • 3

Place the wireless sensor bar on top of or below your television screen in the same place you had the original wired sensor bar. The distance from the console does not make a difference. If your wireless sensor bar uses a dongle, plug it into the back of the Wii.

    • 4

Power up your Wii console. Power up the wireless sensor bar by pressing the power button on the bar. The wireless bar will immediately pick up the signal from your Wii remote, and you can begin playing games.

Optionally, you can navigate to the Wii's Settings menu to calibrate the sensor bar for slightly better accuracy. When done playing, turn off the console and turn off the wireless sensor bar.
