What Are Wii Points Used For?

Wii Points are a form of currency designed for use with the Nintendo Wii video game console. The Wii, which launched in North America, Japan and most of Europe in late 2006, allows consumers to download various types of video games by using a broadband Internet connection to visit the Wii Shop Channel. However, doing so requires the use of Wii Points.
  1. Cost of Wii Points

    • In North American territories, one Wii Point is equivalent to one cent, meaning that each 100 Wii Points costs exactly $1. In Japan, one point equals one Yen, while in Europe, 2000 points cost 20 Euros.

    Purchasing Wii Points

    • Wii Points Cards may be purchased in 2000 point quantities at most retailers that carry gaming-related products. They may also be ordered directly from the Wii Shop Channel using a credit card.

    Virtual Console

    • Wii Points may be used to download games that were originally featured on older video game consoles and computer platforms. The cost of these "Virtual Console" games varies, but typically cost between 500 and 1000 Wii Points.

    WiiWare and Wii Channels

    • Original titles developed specifically for the Nintendo console, known as "WiiWare," can also be downloaded and typically cost between 500 and 1500 points. Likewise, some applications, including an Internet browser, can be downloaded for 500 points or less, though many are free.

    Wii Points Name Change

    • Due to the release of the Nintendo DSi, as of April 5, 2009, Wii Points will be redubbed Nintendo Points. The use of the points will remain essentially unchanged, but they will now work on either the Wii home gaming console or the DSi portable gaming system.
