How to: Install World of Warcraft Using Wine

Wine is free emulation software that allows computer programs written for Microsoft Windows to run on Unix-based operating systems. In essence, Wine mimics the functions of the Windows OS by providing alternate libraries that Windows programs call. "World of Warcraft," a popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game, can be installed with Wine to run on a Unix-based OS.

Instructions

  1. Installation

    • 1

Create a temporary installation directory in a location you can easily find.

    • 2

Copy all the files on the first "World of Warcraft" CD into the temporary directory.

    • 3

Copy all the "Installer Tome #.mpq" files from any remaining installation CDs. Only the "Installer Tome" files from the remaining discs should be copied.

    • 4

Open a terminal and switch to the directory by running the command "cd /<directory-path>/" -- where <directory-path> is the path to the directory you created in Step 1.

    • 5

Once in the directory run the command "wine Installer.exe"

    • 6

To install expansions such as "The Burning Crusade" or "Cataclysm," repeat the steps but create a new temporary installation directory for each.
