Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction Glitches or Cheats

When it was first released in 2001, "Diablo II: Lord of Destruction" was met with critical acclaim and quickly embraced by fans, but the game has received far more than temporary acclaim; Lord of Destruction remains on GameFAQ's list of the 10 most popular PC games more than eight years later. This article describes various codes, Easter eggs and glitches that may allow you to get more enjoyment out of this tenacious game.
  1. Difficulty

    • The code "/players X" (where "X" is a number 1 through 8) changes the difficulty level in a single-player game as if it were a multi-player game with a number of players equal to X. The higher the value of X, the tougher your enemies will be. However, they will also drop better equipment and give you more experience. This code works in all difficulties and acts

    Miscellaneous

    • If you find the music or sound effects on the main menu annoying, they can be toggled by pressing "Ctrl+M" or "Ctrl+S," respectively. If you're inclined toward the other extreme, typing "soundchaosdebug" in the chat box will play every sound at once. Of the two remaining miscellaneous codes that can be typed into the chat box, "/fps" displays how many frames per second Diablo 2 is running at, and "/nopickup" will prevent you from picking up items unless you have pressed the "Alt" key, which can be very useful in crowded areas.

    Cow Level

    • The secret Cow Level may be unlocked after completing each difficulty level by inserting Wirt's Leg and a Tome of Town Portal into the Horadric Cube and transmuting. This will open a portal to the secret Cow Level. The cows do not give very much experience, but you will receive better loot than most other places in the game. The cows can be difficult to kill with melee characters, but paladins and sorceresses are quite effective against them. Enjoy the loot, but bear in mind that if you kill the Cow King, you will not be able to make the portal again for that difficulty level.

    Glitches

    • Three glitches that can be exploited in "Diablo II: Lord of Destruction" include item duplication, keeping the Horadric Malus and passing through destroyed towers with the barbarian in Act 5.

Items can be duplicated in open Battlenet by changing the properties of your character's save file to "read only," which will prevent the game from saving any changes to your character, meaning that when you drop an item in a multiplayer game and exit, that item will remain in your character's inventory in the saved file. Just remember to turn off the "read only" setting so you can progress in the game once you're done duplicating items.

You can hold on to the Horadric Malus by equipping the Malus to your secondary weapons set and then switching back to your primary weapons set before talking to Charsie. Once she has finished talking, press select "Imbue" on the dialog menu and then click out of the imbue screen. You will then be able to imbue an item while retaining the Malus.

The Barbarian is able to pass through fortified towers in Act 5 by using Whirlwind after they have been destroyed.
