How to Create a Counter Strike Source Map

If you have mastered all the maps available to play in Counter-Strike: Source, you might want to take the next step and create maps of your own. The Valve Hammer Editor program lets you create maps that can be uploaded to games like Counter-Strike. Once you know the basics of creating a room with this program, and adding simple objects like a counter-terrorist character and a light source, you can move on to developing a full map to battle terrorists within.

Instructions

    • 1

Load up the Valve Hammer Editor program and create a new map by selecting New in the File menu. Drag the toolbars to the side to provide more viewing room for the map. The top view grid is labeled x/y and the side views are at the bottom with the letter z in the labels.

    • 2

Use the Block Tool to create a room in the map. Drag the tool along the top view grid to make a block 256 units wide and deep. Make that block 192 units tall in the side view grid and press Enter. Hollow out the block by pressing Ctrl-H and selecting -32 as the thickness in the dialog box that appears.

    • 3

Make a light entity with the Entity Tool, which is above the Block Tool. Select Light entity from the list to the right. Keeping the default setting is recommended. Place the entity within the block in the top view grid, then move it down in side view until it is within the block. Press Enter and a red dot appears in the block representing the light.

    • 4

Select a spawn point within the block, which is where the character starts the game. With the Entity Tool still on, select Info_player_counterterrorist in the list and place the entity in the room using the top grid. Make sure it is at least eight units above the floor when adjusting its position in the side grid.

    • 5

Select any other items you want in the map from the Entity list. Place them anywhere in the block (room) you wish using the same method.

    • 6

Save your map in case any errors occur while the map compiles.

    • 7

Press F9 to compile the map. In the dialog box, select Normal in the squares labeled BSP, VIS and RAD in the dialog box. Check the box labeled Don't run the game after compiling. Press Enter and let the map compile.

Close Hammer and open Counter-Strike: Source. Open the console and input map, followed by the name of your map file. Press Enter to load the map into Counter-Strike.
