Hints For Dragon Ball Z: Budokai

Released on the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo GameCube in 2002, Atari's "Dragon Ball Z: Budokai" fighting game re-enacts a majority of the comic book and animated series from the beginning of the series all the way to the battle with the powerful android called Cell. "Dragon Ball Z: Budokai" features 23 different playable characters including series mainstays like Goku, Vegeta and Trunks as well as supporting characters like Great Saiyaman, Ginyu and Hercule.
  1. Fighting

    • While characters in "Dragon Ball Z: Budokai," unlike many traditional fighting games, cannot jump or duck, they do possess many other defensive abilities. Pressing the "Guard" button in combination with a direction on the directional pad will make a character dodge, while pressing "Guard" when an enemy shoots a Ki Blast at you will deflect the attack and possibly even reverse the direction of the blast.
The game contains a feature called the "Burst Zone," which occurs when characters try to use the same move on one another simultaneously. The players will enter a quick challenge where they have to quickly rotate the left analogue stick as many times as possible. The player who rotates the stick the most will stun the losing player, making him unable to block the winning player's next attack.

    Unlocking Characters

    • When you begin the game, many of the game's playable characters won't be available. To unlock them, you must first play through the game's Story Mode and defeat them in battle. To unlock every character, you will need to play the Story Mode a second time, as the first completion will unlock more chapters to play.
Two characters must be unlocked by finishing the game's World Tournament mode. Completing World Tournament at the "Adept" difficulty will unlock Hercule while finishing in "Advanced" difficulty will make available Great Saiyaman.

    World Tournament Mode

    • World Tournament Mode, according to GameFAQs, is one of the more difficult modes in "Dragon Ball Z: Budokai" due to the added risk of loss by "ring out" if an opponent is able to knock you out of the fighting boundaries. When fighting in this mode, you would do well to use the characters' ability to dodge in order to avoid from being thrown out of bounds. Conversely, attempting to knock the opponent out of the ring may prove an effective strategy to achieve a fast win.
