List of War Games & Violent Action Games for PS2

The Sony PlayStation 2 was released in 2000 and eventually became the best-selling game console of all time. With nearly 11,000 available titles, the PS2 boasts one of the largest and most diverse game libraries to ever exist. Many top-selling PS2 games received Mature ratings from the Entertainment Software Rating Board for the inclusion of gore and violence. Despite their controversial content, war games and violent action games continue to be widely successful.
  1. Call of Duty Series

    • The most successful war game franchise is undoubtedly the Call of Duty series. There are five CoD games available on the PlayStation 2 platform, and they all focus on historical World War II battles. "Call of Duty: Finest Hour" and "Call of Duty: Big Red One" were the first two CoD games released for the PS2, and were later re-released as a combo pack called "Call of Duty: Legacy." In "Call of Duty: World at War: Final Fronts," players take part in the Battle of the Bulge. "Call of Duty 3" follows the American, British and Polish armies in the Falaise Gap.

    Other War Games

    • War games are incredibly popular, and they represent many different gaming genres. "Medal of Honor: European Assault" and "Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30" are World War II games similar to the CoD series. "ShellShock: Nam 1967" and "Vietcong: Purple Haze" take place during the Vietnam war. "Socom: U.S. Navy Seals" is a tactical action game with a focus on squad-based combat. "Commandos 2: Men of Courage" is a tactical strategy game in which players carefully plan their actions in advance. "Army Men" is a real-time strategy game in which the entire army is under your command.

    Grand Theft Auto Series

    • One of the most successful, violent and controversial series of games is Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto. Players are given free reign to wreak havoc in an open world where anything goes. "Grand Theft Auto III" follows Claude, an escaped convict on a mission to exact revenge on his ex-girlfriend. The next game in the series, "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City," takes place in the 1980s. The game's protagonist, Tommy Vercetti, rises to the top of the criminal underworld by stabbing his friends in the back. "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" takes place in the 1990s and follows CJ Johnson's attempts to leave the ghetto behind and make a better life for his family.

    Other Violent Games

    • "God of War" is considered one of the most violent games available on the PS2. The game includes gruesome scenes of murder and excessive gore powered by a mythological storyline featuring Zeus, Poseidon and Hades. "Resident Evil 4" is another violent action game that requires players to kill hundreds of possessed South American villagers. One particularly violent game, "Manhunt 2," was nearly banned from retail due to violent content. Players control Daniel Lamb, an escaped mental patient with amnesia, as he brutally stalks and murders anyone that he encounters.
