How to Become Overpowered in Demon's Souls

"Demon's Souls" is synonymous with brutality. Upon its stateside release in October of 2009, this action RPG for the PlayStation 3 became notorious for its extreme difficulty. While the "games as art" debate wages on between gaming enthusiasts and outsiders, "Demon's Souls" is an argument for "games as punishment." The game's setting, Boletaria, is filled with hordes of ruthless demons that delight in human suffering. These evil denizens are intimidating, but players can overpower their characters and become more menacing than the opposition. With the right tools, a little magic, and a legendary sword, intrepid heroes can conquer "Demon's Souls" in short order.

Choose the Royalty class when creating your character. Royals are equipped with the Soul Arrow spell, a very powerful tool to start with. Magicians and Priests also begin the game with spells, but a Royalty character excels by starting with a ring that regenerates magic points (MP). Combine the benefits of this trinket with the range and attack power afforded by the Soul Arrow, and your character is a killing machine in the early going.

Never become complacent when progressing through "Demon's Souls." Your character is still vulnerable to the many pits and traps that litter the dungeons of Boletaria. As you reach later areas in the game, you must acquire a larger arsenal of weapons to maintain your advantage over the enemy.

Upgrade your character's offensive magic. Earn souls in battle and raise your character's Magic attribute to increase spell potency. Moreover, spend souls to raise the Intelligence stat and increase the amount of spells your character can memorize. Do this by talking to the Maiden in Black in the Nexus hub once you acquire a sufficient amount of souls.

Learn a few key spells, and your character will amass enough power to eliminate any villain.

"You can spend hours mastering the fine art of blocking and attacking, but really all that you need to do is learn and develop a few powerful spells. That'll get you through nearly every challenge," says Jason Venter, freelance games writer and IGN contributor.

If you haven't chosen the Royalty character class, purchase the Soul Arrow spell from Sage Freke (or his apprentice) and the Firestorm spell from Yuria the Witch.

Most monsters are weak against magic, and few bosses can withstand Firestorm attacks. Acquire this spell, regularly improve your Magic stat, and watch gargantuan bosses wither and die after a few flicks of your wand.

Learn and upgrade "miracles." Miracles are spells based around the Faith attribute that protect your character from taking damage. Faith governs both the potency and quantity of spells your character can utilize.

Most miracles are defense-oriented, but some of these Faith-based abilities serve as attacks. The God's Wrath miracle learned from Saint Urbain is an overpowered magical attack akin to Firestorm and is an important part of every overpowered hero's repertoire.

The Warding and Second Chance miracles allow your character to avoid damage and cheat death. Learn Warding from Sage Freke, and your character will be nearly impervious to physical attacks. Acquire Second Chance from Saint Urbain, and you'll have an extra opportunity to defeat your foe if you perish.

Use these defensive skills effectively, and your character will be unbeatable.

Fight Old King Doran as soon as possible. Defeating this character earns you one of the game's most powerful weapons, the Demonbrandt sword. This task can be completed early on in the game, allowing you to raise your character's killing prowess to ridiculous heights.

To pull this off, you must be willing to face a few formidable opponents.

Loot the Mausoleum Key from the character Ostrava, if he should perish at any point between World 1-1 and 1-4. You'll meet this character near the beginning of the game, and ensuring he dies is a necessity in your quest for power. Ostrava roams throughout World 1. Allow the region's enemies to rough him up and move in for the kill if necessary. Grab the key, locate the red-eyed knight in 1-1, and slay him (use magic from a distance or ranged weaponry). Open the nearby doors with the Mausoleum Key and fight Old King Doran. Lower his health significantly, and the venerable king will withdraw from battle, allowing you to access the Demonbrandt.

Obtain the sword and maintain "White Character Tendency" (seek out and kill Black Phantoms in online and offline duels). You will receive a substantial damage bonus with every swing of the absurdly powerful sword.
