How to Install a KES-400AAA on a PlayStation 3

The Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) doubles as both a gaming system and a Blu-ray player. This can be a convenient arrangement because your PS3 can serve as an all-purpose home entertainment device, but it can also be a huge problem if one of your PS3 system's components blows out, such as the PS3's KES-400A Blu-ray laser lens. If your PS3 is still under warranty, Sony may replace the lens for free; otherwise, you can pay either Sony or a third-party vendor to install a new lens. Alternately, you can purchase a KES-400A lens and perform the installation yourself.

Instructions

  1. Remove the PS3 Case

    • 1

Unplug the PS3's power source. Unplug all other devices and cables that are attached to your PS3.

    • 2

Remove the rubber footing that is located directly above the PS3's hard drive, labeled "HDD." Use a small flathead screwdriver to leverage the rubber footing out of place.

    • 3

Unscrew the security screw under the footing. Use a Torx screwdriver to remove this screw.

    • 4

Slide the top of the case off of your PS3. Doing so will reveal a secondary casing.

    • 5

Remove the seven screws located around the edge of the PS3's secondary casing. Also remove the two clips at the back of the casing.

    • 6

Lift the secondary casing off of the PS3 to reveal the system's inner workings.

    Replace the KES-400A Lens

    • 7

Locate the PS3's Blu-ray drive; it is an easily recognizable white rectangular box.

    • 8

Remove the ribbon cable that connects the Blu-ray drive to the PS3 system.

    • 9

Remove the five screws that secure the metal facing along the edges of the drive, and gently lift the facing off to reveal the Blu-ray lens.

    • 10

Remove the four screws that hold the Blu-ray lens into place. These are the screws that affix the silver rectangular metal plate over the lens.

    • 11

Remove the old KES-400A Blu-Ray lens, and gently slide your replacement lens into its place.

    • 12

Reattach the rectangular plate that holds the lens in place.

    • 13

Reaffix the five screws that hold the Blu-ray drive's outer metal facing in place.

    • 14

Plug the ribbon cable back in to the Blu-ray drive and the PS3's main system board.

    Reassemble the Case

    • 15

Place the secondary casing back in place.

    • 16

Reattach the seven screws and the two small clips that secure the secondary casing.

    • 17

      Replace the main casing.

    • 18

Screw the Torx security screw back in place. Reaffix the rubber footing on top of the Torx security screw.
