How to Repair PSP Games

The Universal Media Disc, or UMD, is a type of small optical disk that was developed by Sony to be used with the PlayStation Portable. Although UMDs have a maximum storage of nearly two gigabytes and are capable of storing full length games and movies, the casing that holds the disk, unfortunately, was not designed with durability in mind. In fact, the simple act of placing and removing UMDs from their box can cause considerable damage to them and often leads to cracked casings that can render your games or movies unusable. If you find that this problem is a common occurrence with your UMDs, you can fix them yourself with a simple process.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of Scotch tape that is roughly the length of your index finger.

    • 2

Grasp your broken PSP game. Pinch the cracked edges of the UMD case shut. Most UMD cases tend to crack at the top of the rounded edge.

    • 3

Place the Scotch tape around the cracked edge of the UMD case. The tape should only be on the top part of the rounded edge to keep it from coming in contact with the actual disc that sits inside the UMD case. Do not fold over the sides of the tape.

    • 4

Cut off the excess tape. Hold the blade of the knife against the edge of the UMD case at an angle. Shave the overhanging tape off each side of the UMD.

    • 5

Press down the remaining tape to keep it in place and hold the cracked edges of the UMD case together.

    • 6

Test out the game in a PSP system to ensure that it has been properly repaired.
