How to Copy PSP UMD Games Onto a Memory Stick

Sony&'s PSP portable gaming device boasts impressive capabilities, including wireless Internet connectivity, digital download service, and support for high-capacity external memory sticks. While the main format used for PSP games is the UMD, or "Universal Media Disc," many full-length UMD games can also be downloaded directly from the PlayStation Network. Furthermore, a large number of UMD games support a "Data Install" feature which allows users to install the UMD game disc data directly to their memory stick. This not only speeds up load times, but reduces battery consumption.

Instructions

  1. Downloading UMD Games

    • 1

Power up your PSP and navigate to the PlayStation Store on the media crossbar.

    • 2

Create a new PlayStation Network account by clicking on "Get a PlayStation Network ID," or log in using your existing PlayStation Network ID.

    • 3

Find a PSP title you wish to download by browsing through the PlayStation Store. You can browse by "Title," "Genre," or "Top Sellers" using the category icons on the left side of the PlayStation Store interface.

    • 4

Add funds to your PlayStation Network "Wallet," or enter the 16-digit code from a PSN Points Card to add the appropriate amount of money to purchase your selected title. You should be automatically prompted to add more funds at the download page if your account does not have sufficient funds.

    • 5

Download your selected PSP UMD title by selecting "Buy" from the title download page. When the download is complete you will be able to access your new game at any time by selecting the "Games" section of the Media Crossbar. Simply navigate to "Memory Stick" to locate any games downloaded in this manner.

    Data Install Feature

    • 6

Insert the PSP UMD disc you wish to use with Data Install. Be aware that not every PSP game features a Data Install option. Check your user manual for more information if you are unsure about your chosen title.

    • 7

Select the chosen UMD disc by clicking on the UMD disc icon under the "Games" section of the Media Crossbar.

    • 8

Locate the "Data Install" feature on the main menu of your chosen game. If you do not see this option on the main menu, select "Options" and then look for "Data Install." The game will notify you of the amount of space required to perform the Data Install procedure. If you have enough free space on your card simply press "X" to confirm the installation. If not, free up some space on your memory card and then try the operation again.
