How to Play a PS2 From a USB Memory Stick Extreme

Using a USB Memory Stick Extreme to play PlayStation 2 games can save the disc drive in the PlayStation console from burning out or wearing out and thus preserve the life of the game console for a longer period of time. This is not a difficult thing to do, but it does require the use of a USB Memory Stick Extreme or a USB Advance, and the downloading of one or two specific files.

Things You'll Need

  • USB Advance or USB Extreme
  • Swap Magic 3 (official disc)

Instructions

Purchase Swap Magic 3 and get the official disc (See Resources). A burned copy of this program will not work so it must be purchased for each person wishing to use it. Insert the Swap Magic disc into a Playstation 3 console and load the contents of the disc to the menu. Once loaded, select "uLaunch" from the Swap Magic SMBoot Folder, then select "SMBOOT1" and configure to match any controller button the user desires (e.g. the X button). Once the button is selected, go to MISC Folder and choose the "FILEBROWSER" option, which links the selected button to the File Browser. Press "OK" and go to the browser.

Download the Badata-System pack (See Resources). Copy this folder to the virtual memory card in the PS3 system, then enter the Badata-System folder through the menu and move the Swap Magic folder to the virtual memory card main folder. Quit by pressing the PlayStation button on the controller, then select and launch the Swap Magic file.

Plug the USB memory stick into the PS3 and transfer saved PS2 games to the memory stick. This is done using USB Extreme or USB Util (See Resources). The games can then be played from the USB memory stick.
