PS2 HDD Games

The PS2 hard disc drive (HDD) was released on March 23, 2004, in North America. With the exception of one game ("Final Fantasy XI"), very few games made use of the hard drive. It was routinely used to speed up load times or store data. With the introduction of the PS2 Slim, support for the hard drive was dropped as the PS2 Slim did not include an expansion bay.
  1. Final Fantasy XI

    • "Final Fantasy XI" was released on March 23, 2004. "Final Fantasy XI" was the only PS2 game that required the hard drive. The hard drive was bundled with the game and for a short period was the only way to get the hard drive (it wouldn't be made available separately for months after FFXI's release). "Final Fantasy XI" was one of the few online role playing games to be released for the PS3. PS2 players played on the same servers as the PC players, allowing them to chat, trade items and go on missions together.

    SOCOM 3: U.S. Navy SEALs

    • "SOCOM 3: U.S. Navy SEALs" was released on Oct. 11, 2005. "SOCOM 3" was the final "SOCOM" game released for the PS2. Similar to previous games in the series, "SOCOM 3" was a third-person action game with realistic physics and bullet behavior. With the support of the hard drive, additional maps could be downloaded via the "SOCOM Store," a short-lived content distribution service for "SOCOM 3" (the maps have since been made available for free).

    The Sims 2

    • "The Sims 2" was released on Oct. 24, 2005. "The Sims" is a life simulator that lets you create your own characters (referred to as "Sims") and manage them as they go on about their day-to-day business. "The Sims 2" could detect when a hard drive was installed and would automatically create a cache for the game, which would drastically reduce load times.
