How to Fix Scratched PS2 Games at Home

PlayStation 2 games are bound to scratch over time, especially if you don't keep them in their protective cases. Still, accidents will happen, and even dropping a disc once can scratch it, causing it to skip or freeze each time you try to play it. Even if the disc is completely non-functional, you can try to fix it at home without the need for expensive disc-repair equipment.

Things You'll Need

  • Soft, non-abrasive cloth
  • Mild dish detergent
  • Compressed air
  • Towel
  • Hair dryer
  • Metal polish
  • Car wax

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the disc up to the light and check for top-layer damage. The top layer of the disc is composed of a type of foil. If it's damaged, you'll be able to see through the damaged area where the foil is torn or scratched. Once you damage the top layer, there's nothing you can do to save your disc.

    • 2

Run the disc under a gentle stream of warm water to rinse away the grime. Wash the disc gently using a mild dish detergent if it's extremely dirty. Pour a small amount of detergent on a soft, non-abrasive cloth and wipe it very gently across the disc from the center to the outside edge. Rinse it completely when finished.

    • 3

Dry the disc completely with a hair dryer on a low setting, keeping a distance of 6 inches to a foot between the hair dryer and the disc so you don't damage the plastic of the disc.

    • 4

Lay out a towel on a flat, well-lit surface so you have a place to rest the disc when preparing the metal polish and car wax later.

    • 5

Give the disc a quick dusting using a can of compressed air.

    • 6

Put a few drops of metal polish onto a soft, lint-free cloth. Buff the disc's scratches using a circular motion to evenly to polish them away.

    • 7

Rinse the metal polish from the disc using a gentle stream of warm water from your tap. Dry the disc completely using the hair dryer on a low setting, keeping a distance of 6 inches to a foot between the hair dryer and disc at all times.

    • 8

Put a small amount of car wax on a soft, lint-free cloth and buff the disc in a gentle, circular motion like you did when applying the metal polish. Make sure to spread it evenly.

    • 9

Wait for the car wax to dry. Rinse it off using warm water or clean it from the disc using a soft cloth, wiping in straight lines from the center outward. Make sure the disc is completely dry and free of car wax before testing it.
