How to Troubleshoot a PlayStation 2 Controller

If you're having problems with your PlayStation 2 controller, you can try a few troubleshooting techniques rather than buy a new controller or have the old one repaired. Troubleshooting your PS2 controller only takes a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Power off your PlayStation 2 and remove the controller from the controller ports.

    • 2

Make sure nothing is obstructing the controller connectors or the controller ports. Look for cracking, damage and dust. If the controller port is dusty, use a can of compressed air to force the dust out of the port.

    • 3

Carefully examine the wire connecting the controller to the console. Make sure it isn't broken, torn or frayed.

    • 4

Reconnect the controller to the first controller port of the console. Make sure the controller is inserted all the way into the port.

    • 5

Lay the controller flat on the ground with the buttons and analog sticks facing up. Make sure nothing's pressing on the buttons or touching the analog sticks.

    • 6

Power on the PlayStation 2 with the disc tray open and try the controller.

    • 7

Insert a game and try the controller. If it doesn't work, try it in the second controller port or press the button in the center of the controller to toggle the analog function (the controller's red light might turn on or off). The analog function is mandatory for some games; other games don't support it at all.

Try the controller on another PlayStation 2. If it doesn't work, the problem is the controller and it needs to be sent in for repairs or replaced.
