Phase Alternate Line is a video standard used in most countries outside the United States and Japan. PAL devices output a signal that National Television Systems Committee televisions cannot understand because the video frame size and frame rate standards are different. Using a TV from the U.S. with a PlayStation 2 from Europe is not possible without using a video signal converter, and because many games are only made for European markets, the only way to play these games in the U.S. is to use a PAL PS2 and a PAL-to-NTSC video signal converter box.
