Things You'll Need
Instructions
Flip the Playstation 2 over and rest it on the top of a table. To prevent scratching, place a place mat or dish towel underneath the console. Make sure the power cord is not connected.
Remove the protectors on the bottom of the Playstation 2. There are six protectors on the casing of the console. Four of them are rubber and located on the corners of the console. The other two are plastic and are located on the raised section of the console. Place the pieces in a bowl so they are not lost.
Unscrew the six screws located underneath the protector pieces. The four base screws are long, and the two screws on the raised section of the console are about half the size. Remember their location, and place them into the bowl.
Break the seal on the side of the Playstation 2. The seal is a warranty seal, and by breaking it, any warranty left on the machine will be voided. For older consoles, the warranty likely has expired. Contact Sony for more information, if needed.
Remove the bottom half of the Playstation 2 by lifting up the plastic casing slowly. Do not force the casing up, or it could break. Flip the casing backward, and lay it down flat so the connection to the "Reset" and "Eject" button is not torn off.
Use an air duster such as Dust Off to clean out the machine. Wear a face mask to avoid inhaling any dust or debris. A few sprays around the console should be enough to clear out the dirt.
Use a paper towel to wipe away any extra dust or dirt on the console. After wiping down sections, spray away any loose particles again.
Unscrew the disc drive cover using a mini screwdriver. There are four screws located around the corners of the disc drive. Place the screws in the bowl.
Gently lift off the cover to the disc drive and set it aside. Using a paper towel corner, gently glide over the disc laser to clean it. Use a small spray of air to remove any extra dust. Do not touch the laser with your finger, because that could permanently damage the player.
Replace all of the components to the Playstation 2. Insert all of the screws and reattach the rubber protectors. Plug in the system and try out a game to see if the laser or performance has improved.
