Uses for a Soft Modded PS2

A software modification, also referred so as a "softmod," of a PlayStation 2 takes advantage of a glitch in the way PS2 consoles read and execute game data. Unlike a "hardmod," which requires the user to modify hardware components of the console, softmodding a PS2 only requires changes to the software running the machine. Although softmodding your PS2 opens it to new uses, doing so will void any warranty and may render the console unplayable.
  1. Playing Backup Copies

    • It is legal to create backup copies of PS2 games you rightfully own so you can continue to play if the original disc becomes lost or damaged. However, you must use a soft-modded PS2 to play these backup copies. To create game backups, you must have the necessary software on your computer to create a working copy of the game, called an ISO image, and a CD or DVD burning drive to put the game data on. You can find PS2 game backup software on console modification websites and forums or peer-to-peer file sharing networks.

    Running "Homebrew" Software

    • A soft-modded PS2 can play user-created games, media players and other programs, often collectively referred to as "Homebrew." You can find homebrew PS2 software on homebrew or PS2 user-created content forums and websites or peer-to-peer networks. Because homebrew programs are usually smaller than branded PS2 games, you can play them from a USB drive in addition to a CD or DVD.

    Playing Imports

    • All games and game consoles utilize regional coding to maintain consistency with televisions in different countries and manage copyrights and distribution throughout the world. North America, China and Japan use NTSC coding, while Europe, Africa, Australia and most of Asia uses PAL. A soft-modded PS2 can play any game, regardless of the regional coding. This allows users to play games that have not been released in their region or different translations of games. Playing games that are not meant for your region can cause a decrease in video quality.

Play games Directly From the Hard Drive

    • If you do not want to keep backup copies of your games on CDs or DVDs, you can store and play them directly from a soft-modded PS2's hard drive. Playing games from the hard drive decreases load times and increases the lifespan of the disc-spinning motor and the laser. You must download or purchase a PS2 booting program and create and burn a boot disc on your computer. To play games form the hard drive, you will have to insert the boot disc first. Some games utilize Dynamic Network Authentication System security to combat illegal distribution and piracy and will not let you play online if you load them from the hard drive.
