How to Decrease Ping on a PS3

While one-way Internet connectivity is measured in standard speed units such as kilobytes per second, two-way Internet connections are measured in pings. A ping is essentially a measurement of how long a transmission takes to go from one computer to another computer, then back to the original computer. If you are experiencing high ping rates on your Playstation 3, it means that either your Internet connection needs to be tweaked or you need to select another gaming server.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a closer server. If you are located in Illinois and you log into a server based in Russia, the distance will greatly contribute to a high ping. You can reduce this by searching for a more nearby server.

    • 2

Upgrade your Internet connection. To play very graphics intense games over the Internet, you need download speeds of at least 4,750 kilobytes per second and upload speeds of at least 1,125 kilobytes per second.

    • 3

Reduce bandwidth by closing other connections. If you are sharing the connection with a computer, for instance, then shut down all the Internet-based applications on the computer or, better yet, just turn it off.

    • 4

Connect directly to the Internet. Wireless connections typically add anywhere between 40 to 50 points to a ping rating. Standard Ethernet routers also increase ping levels, but not nearly as badly as wireless routers.
