Check the packaging on the software you're using to determine if it is compatible with the vibration function of your controller. Not all games and software programs are compatible. Appropriate packaging will be labeled with a logo indicating its vibrating capability.
Enable the vibration function of the controller. Press the "PS" button on the controller to access the menu. Select "Controller Settings" and push the "X" button on the controller. Highlight "Vibration Function" and hit "X" again. Press the "PS" button twice to return to the software's main menu.
Reset the controller by locating the small "Reset" button on the bottom of the wireless controller. Use a paper clip or small pin to click the button. Connect the USB cable to the controller and the system and press the "PS" button.
Check to see if the vibration function on your controller works with other PlayStation 3 systems to rule out problems specific to your game system.
Verify that you are using a Sony controller suitable for the PlayStation 3 by inspecting the model number on the back of the controller. A Sixaxis controller should have a model number of "CECHZC1U" and a DualShock 3 controller should read "CECHZC2U."
