How to Fix a Volume That Is Going in and out of a TV While Playing on the PS3

The PS3 supports a variety of connection methods and even offers 5.1 and 7.1 digital sound output capability. When you connect your PS3 to your TV, you may experience intermittent sound problems while playing games. This has to do with compatibility of some audio devices with certain Playstation 3 audio output formats. You can resolve this problem by changing the output format to one that works with your audio device.

Instructions

    • 1

Start your Playstation 3 and highlight the "Settings" option from the main menu. Press "X."

    • 2

Scroll down to "Sound Settings" and press "X." Choose "Audio Output Settings" from the list of options and press "X." A popup menu appears.

    • 3

Choose"HDMI" or "Digital Out (Optical)," based on the type of audio connection you use with your PS3. Press "X." A list of possible audio output formats appear.

    • 4

Scroll through the list of audio output formats and choose one of the formats compatible with your audio output device. Press "X" to select it. Refer to your specific audio output device for specific connections compatible with the device. Do not select "Linear PCM 2 Ch. 88.2 kHz" or "Linear PCM 2 Ch. 176.4 kHz," as both of these audio output formats can cause intermittent sound problems.
