How to Transfer a File to PS3 Using Cat5

Many PlayStation 3 users get frustrated because transferring a file from their computer to their PS3 can be quite difficult. The most widely used method requires a wireless or wired connection through a router. While this method works, it also lends itself to sluggish file transfer speeds. Transfer files more efficiently by connecting your PS3 directly to your computer with a Cat5 Ethernet cable. To accomplish this, you must first configure both your computer's Internet connection settings and your PS3.

Instructions

  1. Set Up Computer

    • 1

Click the Start Menu, select the Control Panel and press the "View network status and tasks" button underneath the "Network and Internet" sub-menu to open the Network and Sharing Center.

    • 2

Choose "Change adapter settings" from the left-side menu, right-click on your Internet connection (typically labeled "Local Area Connection") and select the "Properties" option.

    • 3

Click the "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" button, select the "Properties" tab and then select "Use the following IP address." Change your IP address to 10.1.1.1, your subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 and your default gateway to 10.1.1.1.

    • 4

Select "Use the following DNS server addresses." Change your preferred DNS server to 10.1.1.0 and your alternate DNS server to 10.1.1.100.

    Set Up PS3

    • 5

Choose the "Settings" button on the "XcrossMediaBar" home screen menu, select the "Network Settings" option and press the "Internet Connections" button to bring up your PS3's connection properties.

    • 6

Press "OK" and choose the "Custom," "Wired Connection," "Auto-Detect" and "Manual" options in that order to enter the manual submission screen.

    • 7

Change your IP address to 10.1.1.2, your subnet mask to 255.255.255.0, your default router to 10.1.1.0, your primary DNS to 10.1.1.0 and your secondary DNS to 10.1.1.0. Save your settings by selecting "Automatic," "Do Not Use" and "Enabled," and then pressing the "X" button on your controller.

    Make the Connection

    • 8

Open the FTP server on your PS3. Recommended servers include Blackbox and MultiMAN. The IP address 10.1.1.2 should be displayed on your screen.

    • 9

Open the FTP server on your computer. Recommended servers include FileZilla and Go.

    • 10

Connect to the IP address 10.1.1.2 on port 21 to finish the connection. Once connected, you can simply drag and drop files from your computer to your PS3, transferring them at lightning-fast speeds.
