How to Set Up My PS3 and TV for Blu-Rays

One feature that Sony's PlayStation 3 gaming system has that other gaming systems, including the Nintendo Wii and the Xbox 360, do not is a built-in Blu-ray disc player, which allows you to watch high-definition movies in full 1080p. Setting your PlayStation 3 and TV up to play Blu-ray discs is no different than it is when you set it up to play video games.

Things You'll Need

  • Component AV cable
  • HDMI cable

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the supplied power cord into the AC port, which is located on the back of the PlayStation 3 on the far right-hand side, and into a wall outlet or surge protector.

    • 2

Connect your PlayStation 3 to your TV by connecting one end of the HDMI cable to the HDMI input on the back of the PlayStation 3 and the other end to an HDMI port on your TV. If you're using a component AV cable, connect the singular end of the cable to the AV Multi Port on the back of the PlayStation 3, and the five color-coded ends of the cable to the corresponding color-coded ports on the back of your TV.

    • 3

      Turn your TV on.

    • 4

Tune your TV to the input station that you connected the PlayStation 3 cable to, such as HDMI 1 or AV 1.

    • 5

Turn your PlayStation 3 on by pressing the silver power button, which is located on the front of the system on the far right-hand side.

    • 6

Insert a Blu-ray disc into the PlayStation 3.

    • 7

Use the directional arrows on the PlayStation 3 controller to scroll over to the video section of the main menu. The video section is identified by an icon that looks like a movie reel.

    • 8

Press the down arrow on the PlayStation 3 controller to scroll down to the Blu-ray movie, which will be identified by the movie title and a screenshot from the movie.

    • 9

Press the "X" button on the PlayStation 3 controller to begin playing the movie.
