How to Hook Up My Laptop to My PS3 on a Shared Server

One of the features built into the Sony PlayStation 3 is the capability to stream audio and video files from your Microsoft Windows 7 computer. In essence any files that are associated with Windows Media Player are accessible to the PS3 console, giving you the ability to watch the videos on your TV. Once you have the initial connection in place, it is a simple task to watch as many videos as you want. For this to work, both the computer and PS3 need to be on the same network.

Instructions

  1. On the PC

    • 1

Click "Start" and open "Control Panel." Select "Network and Sharing Center" from inside the control panel.

    • 2

Click "Change advance sharing settings" in the left column. Turn on "Network Discover," "Printer and File Sharing" and "Public Folder Sharing." Click "Choose Media Streaming Options..." at the bottom of the window.

    • 3

Find the PS3 from the list of devices; this can be verified by double-clicking an "Unknown Device" and comparing the MAC address to the MAC address on the PS3. Select "Allowed" from the pull-down menu for the PS3 device. Selecting "Allow All" at the top of the page will allow you to share your multimedia content with all devices on your network.

    On the PS3

    • 4

Turn on the PS3 console and your TV. Log in to your PS3 account.

    • 5

Move left 3 times using the PS3 controller to get to the video player controls on the PS3.

    • 6

Press down on the controller stick until you are highlighting the laptop you are streaming video from. Press "X" to select the laptop and choose a file to watch. Press "X" once you find the file to watch it on your TV.
