How to Format a Drive for the PS3

Memory sticks, memory cards and CompactFlash cards are portable storage devices that may be used for the PlayStation 3 to save media or game data, and must be formatted for the PlayStation 3 to be compatible. The formatting process clears the memory device's previous settings, and adds system files specifically for the PS3. Once formatted, the memory device can be inserted into alternate PS3 game consoles to retrieve game data or play songs on the console.

Instructions

    • 1

Lift the PlayStation 3's storage drive lid on the front of the console, and insert the memory stick, memory card or CompactFlash card into the corresponding port.

    • 2

Turn on the television and push "Power" on the front of the PS3 to boot up the console.

    • 3

Tap the down button on the console's game controller to scroll down to "Settings." Tap the right button and select "System Settings."

    • 4

Scroll to "Format Utility" and push "X" to select the menu option. Highlight "Yes" and press "X" to confirm you wish to format the inserted drive.

    • 5

Remove the drive from the PS3's port after the formatting complete message appears onscreen.
