How to Hook Up an Official PS3 Bluetooth

The Sony PlayStation 3 allows you to use a Bluetooth headset to communicate with others online through your console. This is ideal for online gaming, since it allows you to exchange information, strategies and other messages quickly. Sony sells official headsets, but they must be connected -- or "paired" -- with your PlayStation 3. Additionally, the headset is not limited to a single console. You can connect it to as many PlayStation 3 systems as you want through the same step-by-step process.

Instructions

  1. Method One

    • 1

      Turn on your PlayStation 3.

    • 2

Update your system, if necessary. You need the latest firmware -- or at least version 2.50 -- to connect the Sony headset. A wireless Internet connection is necessary to download the software. Select the "Settings" icon at the top left of the main screen. A drop-down menu will appear. Press upward with the left joystick to find the "System Update" icon and then press "X" to start the update. This can take some time, depending on the size of the file. Your system will automatically notify you when the update is complete.

    • 3

Find the USB cable included with the headset. It is a black cable with a flat, rectangular plug. The plug has a small symbol that resembles a three-pronged object. Connect that end to your console with the icon facing up. Connect the smaller end to the port on your Bluetooth headset.

    • 4

Look for a green light. Your Sony headset will show a green light to indicate the connection is complete.

    Method Two

    • 5

Turn on your PlayStation 3. Keep in mind that no USB is required for this method.

    • 6

Hold down the "Power" button until you see green and red lights flashing.

    • 7

Select the "Settings" icon from the main screen. From the drop-down menu, choose "Accessory Settings" and then "Manage Bluetooth Devices."

    • 8

Choose "Yes" and then select "Start Scanning" to initiate the connection process. The PlayStation 3 will begin scanning for any Bluetooth accessories. The system will show any Bluetooth products that it detects.

    • 9

Choose "Wireless Headset" from the list of devices. Write "0000" when the system asks for a password. The connection process is now complete.
