How to Apply the PS3 CFW Patch in Recovery Mode

PlayStation 3 is a video game console that is much like a computer. Equipped with its own hard drive to store game information and other files, the PS3 must have its firmware updated occasionally. Many PS3 users prefer to update systems with custom firmware, or CFW, allowing the use of homebrew applications on the PS3 console. A CFW patch can be installed on a PS3 even if the system is in recovery mode.

Instructions

  Turn off the PS3 console by pressing the "Power" button on the front.

  Hold down the "Power" button again until the system turns on and shuts down again.

  Press the "Power" button once again and wait until you hear a single beep followed by a series of beeps. This places the PS3 system in recovery mode.

  Insert the flash drive containing the CFW patch into your PS3's USB port.

  Go into "Settings," select "System Update" and press the "Triangle" button to install the CFW patch.
