Things You'll Need
Instructions
Use an external hard drive to save and back up all the data and information you have stored on the central processing unit (CPU) of your PS3. Plug the hard drive into the console through the USB port. Turn the PS3 on and select the "Settings" option, then choose "Backup Utility." Pick the "Back Up" option, then pick the hard drive as the device to save your information to. This will prevent the loss of data should the Linux installation need to reformat your system and your data is erased.
Download the Linux installation software to your computer. Insert a blank CD inside the disc drive and burn the software installer onto the blank disc. Make sure to use a marker to label the disc in case you need it for future use.
Go back to the PS3 and again go to the "System Settings" menu. Pick "Format Hard Disk" and format the console's hard disk. This will clear out enough space to install the Linux operating system to the PS3.
Plug the mouse and keyboard into the PS3 USB ports. Stick the installation CD you made into the PS3 gaming system. Go to "System Settings." On the next screen, you will choose the "Install Other OS" option. The PS3 console will restart and begin the installation process.
Check your PS3 for updates. Under the "Settings" option, you will find an option called "System Update." This will allow you to connect to the Internet and download the latest PS3 updates to your console.
