The PlayStation 3, released in 2006, is able to provide patches to software through the use of the PlayStation Network. Whether it is a retail disc release or a downloadable game, players can download patches automatically by starting the game. These patches can fix bugs or errors and provide additional content. However, if the patch is not installed successfully, the game may not function properly. In this case, the patch must be deleted from your PlayStation 3's hard drive.

Navigate to the "Game" tab on the PlayStation 3's main menu.

Select "Game Data Utility."

Highlight the game with the patch you wish to delete and press the "Triangle" button on your PlayStation 3. For example, to delete "Mass Effect 2's" patches, highlight "Mass Effect 2 DLC &Patches" and press "Triangle."

Select "Delete" to delete the game patch from your PlayStation 3's hard drive.
