How to JTAG With Modio

Joint Test Action Group, better known as JTAG, refers to a specific technique for testing connections on an integrated circuit. Electronics such as video game consoles have integrated circuits with pins that allow a JTAG chip to be connected or soldered to a circuit board for enhanced capabilities. This hardware technique is often combined with a software technique -- Modio -- to modify, or mod, the features of video games and consoles on Xbox 360, Wii and PS3. Depending on the hardware and firmware of your console, JTAG and Modio are an advanced option to extend your gaming system features.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the Test Access Port -- TAP -- controller on your circuit board map.

    • 2

Reference the JTAG chip documentation to determine the appropriate connection pins to attach the JTAG device to.

    • 3

Pick a screwdriver from the kit that matches the screws on your console. Remove the screws and detach the console cover. Use caution to avoid damaging any clips or tabs securing the cover to the console.

    • 4

Attach the JTAG chip to the TAP controller. Heat the connections by placing the tip of the soldering iron on the metallic pins.

    • 5

Straighten an inch of your solder coil. Touch the tip of the solder against the heated pin until a drop liquefies. Repeat for each pin of the JTAG chip.

    • 6

Replace the cover of your game console and connect it to your TV and power outlet.

    • 7

Download Modio from the Game Tuts website. Double-click the installation file and follow the onscreen instructions to install the application.

    • 8

Save game data that you want to modify on a memory card or USB drive, depending on what your console uses. Insert the memory card or USB drive into a free port on your computer. It loads as a logical drive, such as "E" drive.

    • 9

Double-click the "Modio" icon on your desktop to launch the application. Next, navigate to the saved game data on your USB game drive. Click the game data and drag it to the Modio application window. A new window will open that displays the "Profile ID" and the "Device ID" for your game data.

    • 10

Pick a modified file for the video game title you want to mod. Click the name of the file to download it to your computer. Next, double-click the downloaded file to unpack it, if necessary. Click on the game data, then drag it to the Modio application window. Another window opens displaying the "Profile ID" and the "Device ID" of the modified game file.

    • 11

Insert your "Profile ID" and "Device ID" into the identical data placeholders of the modified game. Copy the "Profile ID" and the "Device ID" from your original game save, then paste that data on the window for the modified game file. This tricks your game console that data created elsewhere was created locally.

    • 12

Click "Rehash and Resign" on the modified file window. Then click "Save to Device," navigate to your profile folder on the USB drive and finally click "Save." The modified game file is ready to use with your console.
