How to Connect a Wireless Sixaxis

There are two ways to connect a wireless Sixaxis controller to a PlayStation 3 console. Both processes work for the standard Sixaxis controller and the Dualshock 3 version. The connection process is often as easy as turning on the system and pressing a single button on the controller, but any sort of irregularity with the controller or system can cause the two to not connect with each other -- requiring a controller reset.

How to Connect a Wireless Sixaxis

  Connect the large end of the USB cable to one of the PS3's USB ports.

  Connect the small end of the USB cable to the Sixaxis controller.

  Turn on the PS3 console.

  Press the circular "PlayStation Button" at the center of the controller to sync the controller with the console.

  Disconnect the USB cable from the Sixaxis once the controller is charged.
How to Hard Reset and Connect a Sixaxis

  Connect the large end of the USB cable to one of the PS3's USB ports.

  Connect the small end of the USB cable to the Sixaxis controller.

  Turn on the PS3 console.

  Press the circular "PlayStation Button" at the center of the controller and turn the controller upside down when the red lights start flashing.

  Insert a straightened paper clip into the small hole that's a quarter inch to the right of the top-center screw hole and push down the embedded button to perform a hard reset on the controller.

  Flip the controller over again so it's right-side up and press the "PlayStation" button again to connect the Sixaxis to the PS3.

  Disconnect the USB cable from the Sixaxis once the controller is charged.
